Description

Edit

Escalante is a municipality in Cantabria, situated in the flat terrain between the Asón estuary and the Cantabrian coastal strip west of Laredo. The village has an architectural distinction unusual for its size: the Palacio de Escalante, a seventeenth-century manor house of considerable quality, and the associated convent of San Ildefonso, founded by the Augustinian order.

The flat estuarine landscape around Escalante is open and luminous, with the marshes and the low hills of the Asón basin giving the area a wide-sky character distinct from the more enclosed inland valleys. The combination of the manor house architecture and the flat marsh setting makes Escalante one of the more distinctive small stops on the Cantabrian Camino section.
