Description
Cizur Menor is a municipality in Navarra, situated a few kilometres southwest of Pamplona on the Camino Frances. The village is best known for the church of San Miguel Arcángel, a twelfth-century Romanesque church that was part of a commandery of the Order of the Knights of Saint John of Jerusalem, one of the military orders that played a central role in protecting and supporting pilgrims on the Camino routes.
The church retains its Romanesque apse and carved details, and the octagonal seal tower of the former commandery is visible beside the church. The surrounding Navarrese plain is flat and open, with the peaks of the Sierra del Perdón visible to the southwest.
For pilgrims, Cizur Menor is a well-established first stop after Pamplona and a reminder of the important role the military orders played in the development of pilgrimage infrastructure.
