Description
Cirauqui is a municipality in Navarra, situated on a perfectly rounded hilltop above the Salado river valley on the Camino Frances. The church of San Román has a twelve-sided Romanesque portal with densely carved archivolt mouldings, one of the finest examples of Navarrese Romanesque carving in the region.
The streets of the village wind upward in a spiral following the hilltop contour, creating an unusually legible medieval urban form. Beyond the village, the Camino passes over a surviving section of Roman road and a medieval single-arch bridge, connecting multiple layers of the historic route in a short stretch.
For pilgrims, the circular silhouette of Cirauqui on its hill is visible from some distance and provides one of the most distinctive approach views of the entire Navarra section.
