Description
Chozas de Abajo is a municipality in the province of León, on a southern route variant of the Camino Frances across the Páramo Leonés plateau. The name means the lower huts, referring to the simple thatched agricultural shelters that historically dotted the exposed plateau landscape.
The surrounding terrain is the characteristic Páramo: flat, wide, and dominated by cereal cultivation under an enormous sky. The plateau landscape here has a minimal, austere quality that differentiates it from both the Meseta stages to the east and the more enclosed valley country to the west.
For pilgrims on this route variant, Chozas de Abajo provides basic services on the plateau crossing toward the Orbigo valley descent ahead.
