Description
Cernache is a civil parish in the municipality of Coimbra, in the Coimbra district, situated on the southern approach to the city at the foot of the limestone hills. The village has a traditional character with a parish church and stone residential fabric, sitting at the point where the hillside terrain meets the flat Mondego plain.
The surrounding landscape transitions from the limestone plateau above, with its olive groves and cereal fields, to the lower alluvial terrain of the Mondego basin. Cernache is effectively part of the outer suburban orbit of Coimbra while retaining a distinct village identity.
For pilgrims on the Camino Português, Cernache marks the final rural stage before the route enters the city of Coimbra, with the university city’s profile on the hilltop becoming increasingly visible ahead.
