Description
Castromaior is a locality in the province of Lugo, Galicia, on the Camino Frances between Gonzar and Palas de Rei, notable for the Castro de Castromaior, a large Iron Age fortified settlement whose circular earthwork ramparts are clearly visible from the path.
The castro occupies a prominent hilltop beside the Camino, its concentric circular ditches and ramparts preserved in the open plateau terrain. Iron Age hillforts of this type are distributed across the Galician highland and represent the pre-Roman Gallaecian culture that preceded the Roman and medieval layers of the landscape.
For pilgrims, the Castromaior castro is one of the most accessible and visible archaeological sites on the Camino Frances, its circular rampart form immediately legible from the path and providing a direct encounter with the deepest layer of human occupation in this landscape.
