Description

Edit

Carrión de los Condes is a municipality in the province of Palencia, Castilla y León, situated on the Carrión river on the Camino Frances. The town was the capital of the County of Carrión in the medieval Kingdom of Castile and retains a compact historic centre with two Romanesque churches of exceptional quality.

The church of Santiago has a twelfth-century portal with a carved frieze of seated figures in archivolts and a tympanum depicting Christ in Majesty that ranks among the finest Romanesque sculptural programmes in the Palencia region. The church of Santa María del Camino has a Romanesque portal depicting the Epiphany. The Royal Convent of Santa Clara, a fourteenth-century foundation, continues as an active community.

For pilgrims, Carrión is the major service centre of the Palencia stages, a full-service town with accommodation and cultural interest before the long and difficult stage to Sahagún.
