Description
Carballo is a small locality on the Fisterra and Muxía route in the province of A Coruña, Galicia. The name is simply the Galician word for oak, one of the most common place names in the region, indicating a site defined by or associated with oak woodland. Several different places named Carballo exist across Galicia.
This Carballo sits in the terrain west of Santiago on the approach to the Tambre river valley, in mixed woodland and agricultural landscape. The native oak, known as the carballo in Galician, is a culturally significant tree in the region and one of the most recognisable symbols of Galician rural identity.
