Descripción
Baamonde is a locality in the municipality of Begonte, in the province of Lugo, Galicia, situated at an important junction on the Galician pilgrimage road network. The town is the meeting point of the Camino del Norte coastal-inland variant and the Camino Primitivo, where pilgrims coming from the Asturian coast and those coming from Oviedo via the original road converge before continuing together toward Santiago de Compostela.
The locality has a Cistercian monastery, Santa María de Baamonde, with origins in the medieval period, and a medieval bridge over the Ladra river. The albergue and pilgrim services at Baamonde are well established as a recognised rest stop at the convergence of two major Camino routes.
The symbolic significance of the junction, where two of the oldest pilgrimage roads in Spain combine, gives Baamonde an importance beyond its modest size.
