Description
Almeiras is a small locality in the municipality of Culleredo, in the province of A Coruña, Galicia, on the Camino Inglés route between A Coruña and Cambre. The name derives from almeiro, the Galician word for elm tree, indicating a former stand of elms that defined the local landscape. Elm trees were common in the humid Atlantic valleys of Galicia before disease reduced their numbers across Europe in the twentieth century.
The surrounding terrain is the enclosed green valley landscape typical of the A Coruña coast interior, with dairy pasture, mixed woodland, and traditional Galician stone farmhouses with hórreo granaries. The elm toponym places the locality within the broader tradition of botanical place names found throughout the Galician countryside.
