Description
Zabaldica is a hamlet in the municipality of Esteríbar, Navarra, situated on a low hillside above the Arga river, close to the point where the route enters the Pamplona metropolitan area. The village has a compact walled character with the Romanesque church of San Esteban, which contains carved capitals of notable quality dating to the twelfth century.
The church is considered one of the more interesting Romanesque survivals on this section of the Camino, its carved capitals depicting biblical scenes and decorative motifs in the manner of the Navarrese Romanesque school. The village above the river provides one of the last glimpses of rural Navarra before the urban approach to Pamplona.
For pilgrims, Zabaldica is effectively the last small settlement before the Camino enters the suburbs of Pamplona and leads into the historic city centre.
