Description
Vilamaior is a small locality in the municipality of Santiago de Compostela, A Coruña, Galicia, on the Camino Frances in the final approach corridor between Labacolla and the Monte do Gozo. The name means the greater village or main village, the maoir suffix indicating a larger or senior settlement in the local hierarchy.
The hamlet has a compact stone character in the enclosed woodland terrain of the Santiago approach, the pine and eucalyptus forest thinning slightly here to allow glimpses of the wider landscape. The proximity to Santiago makes this one of the most emotionally charged passages for pilgrims, the cathedral increasingly close but still hidden by the terrain.
For pilgrims, Vilamaior is one of the final hamlets before the Monte do Gozo viewpoint and the entry into the Santiago metropolitan area.
