Valtuille de Arriba

Valtuille de Arriba is a small municipality in the province of León, situated on elevated terrain above the Burbia valley on the Camino Frances approach to Villafranca del Bierzo. The village occupies a hillside position with terrace vineyards on the steep slate slopes below.

The terrace vine cultivation on the Bierzo slate slopes is one of the most visually distinctive agricultural forms of the region, with stone retaining walls creating horizontal planting terraces on gradients too steep for standard cultivation. The surrounding landscape is among the more dramatic of the Bierzo wine stages, the valley narrowing and the mountains closing in.

For pilgrims, Valtuille de Arriba is a slight detour from the main route but offers wide views and the striking terrace vine landscape before the descent toward Villafranca.
