Description
Tardajos is a municipality in the province of Burgos, Castilla y León, situated on the Camino Frances as the first village west of the city on the Meseta plain. The village has a compact stone character with the church of La Asunción and traditional Castilian farmhouses.
The surrounding landscape marks the true beginning of the Meseta experience: wide, flat cereal fields stretching to the horizon in every direction, with the sky becoming the dominant feature. A section of Roman road has been identified near the village, reflecting the ancient use of this corridor.
For pilgrims, Tardajos is the first taste of the Meseta after Burgos, a genuine transition from the mountain and foothill stages to the vast open plain that will characterise the next days of walking.
