Description
São Pedro de Rates is a parish in the municipality of Póvoa de Varzim, in the Porto district. Its principal monument, the Igreja de São Pedro de Rates, is one of the finest Romanesque churches in Portugal, dating primarily to the twelfth century. According to tradition, it was built over the site of a sanctuary associated with Saint Peter of Rates, considered the first bishop of Braga.
The church has a three-aisled basilica plan with a carved portal, blind arcading on the exterior walls, and carved capitals inside, all executed in the bold, restrained granite stonework characteristic of Portuguese Romanesque.
São Pedro de Rates is one of the more celebrated stops on the Camino Português, drawing both pilgrims and architecture enthusiasts to its quiet village setting.
