Description
Santibáñez de Valdeiglesias is a small municipality in the province of León, on the Camino Frances between Villares de Orbigo and San Justo de la Vega. The village occupies the transitional terrain between the flat Orbigo valley and the rising scrub oak and heather country of the Maragatería approaches.
The name Valdeiglesias suggests a valley of churches, possibly indicating the medieval presence of several ecclesiastical establishments in the area. The village has a compact stone character with traditional Leonese farmhouses.
The surrounding landscape begins to show the character of the Maragatería, with scrub oak, broom, and heather replacing the flat cereal monoculture of the plain.
