Description
San Salvador de Duio is a civil parish in the municipality of Fisterra, in the province of A Coruña, Galicia. The parish occupies the elevated terrain of the Cape Fisterra promontory and is one of the oldest ecclesiastical foundations on the cape, with traditions of pre-Romanesque and possibly pre-Christian sacred use of the site.
The dedication to San Salvador (the Holy Saviour) is one of the oldest Christian church dedications in Galicia, associated with some of the earliest Christian communities in the region. The elevated position above the cape gives the parish commanding views over the Atlantic in all directions.
For pilgrims who have reached Fisterra, the San Salvador parish represents the oldest layer of sacred geography on the cape, predating both the medieval pilgrimage routes and the lighthouse that now marks the western tip.
