Description

Edit

Ruitelán is a small hamlet in the province of León, situated in the upper Valcarce valley on the Camino Frances between Vega de Valcarce and the Galician border at O Cebreiro. The settlement is one of the last localities in León before the route begins its demanding ascent to the Galician pass.

The hamlet has a handful of traditional stone houses in the deeply forested gorge, with ancient chestnut trees lining the path in a section that is particularly noted for its atmospheric wooded character. A pilgrim hermitage is associated with the village.

For pilgrims, Ruitelán is the final encounter with Leonese territory before the symbolic crossing into Galicia that begins the last great regional transition of the Camino Frances.
