Description

Edit

Puente la Reina is a municipality in Navarra, situated at the confluence of all Camino routes from France at the crossing of the Arga river. The town takes its name from the Romanesque bridge, a six-arch span dating to the eleventh century, said to have been built at the order of a Navarrese queen for the benefit of pilgrims.

The bridge is one of the finest and most photographed medieval structures on the Camino Frances. Its six rounded arches carry the road across the Arga on a slightly rising curve, the pale stone warm against the river below. The old town on the north bank has the church of El Crucifijo, housing a notable Y-shaped Crucifixion attributed to Rhine Valley craftsmen, and the church of Santiago with a Romanesque portal.

The phrase commonly associated with Puente la Reina captures its symbolic position: from here, the single united route walks southwest toward Logroño, Burgos, and Galicia.
