Description
Pena de Mirallos is a rocky viewpoint in the province of Lugo, Galicia, on the Camino Frances on the descent toward Portomarin and the Miño reservoir. The name combines pena, rock or crag, with mirallos, suggesting a place from which to look out, a natural viewpoint over the valley below.
The site provides some of the first views over the Embalse de Belesar, the reservoir created when the Miño river was dammed at Portomarin in the 1960s. The panorama opens from the rocky crag to reveal the wide body of water and the town of Portomarin on its ridge above the far bank.
For pilgrims, Pena de Mirallos is one of the more memorable viewpoints on the Sarria-Portomarin stage, the sudden appearance of the reservoir and the town ahead being a visual landmark on the approach.
