Descripción
Nosa Señora da Barca refers to the Santuario da Virxe da Barca, the pilgrimage sanctuary at Muxía on the Costa da Morte in the province of A Coruña, Galicia. The church is dedicated to Our Lady of the Boat, commemorating the legend in which the Virgin Mary arrived at this Atlantic headland in a stone boat to encourage the apostle Santiago during his evangelisation of the Iberian Peninsula.
The current Baroque church dates primarily to the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, replacing an earlier structure. The building stands on a dramatic granite promontory surrounded on three sides by the Atlantic Ocean, and the large rocking stones around the sanctuary, associated with the legendary stone boat, are venerated by pilgrims who visit the site.
Nosa Señora da Barca is the spiritual endpoint of the Muxía variant of the Camino pilgrimage, and the sanctuary is one of the most dramatically sited religious buildings in Galicia.
