Descripción
Murias de Rechivaldo is a small municipality in the province of León, Castilla y León, the first village of the Maragatería on the Camino Frances after leaving Astorga. The Maragatería is a distinctive cultural and geographic region of western León, defined by its own architectural tradition, dialect, and customs.
The village has well-preserved examples of traditional Maragata stone architecture: sturdy rectangular buildings with slate roofs, carved stone doorways, and the substantial walled farmyard enclosures that characterise the local building form. The Maragato people have a historically notable identity as muleteers and long-distance traders.
For pilgrims, Murias de Rechivaldo signals the beginning of the demanding mountain approaches toward the Cruz de Ferro and the Bierzo.
