Descripción
Mourisca do Vouga is a parish in the municipality of Águeda, situated where the inland agricultural landscape begins to flatten and blend into the broader wetland system of the Vouga river basin. The Vouga flows westward from the inland hills toward the Ria de Aveiro lagoon, and the terrain around Mourisca reflects this estuarine transition: wide, low, and dominated by water meadows and reed beds.
The name ‘Mourisca’ carries historical echoes of the Moorish presence in medieval Portugal, and the parish is one of several along the Vouga valley that retain this toponymic memory. The settlement itself is modest, with agriculture and some fishing or reed harvesting forming the basis of traditional livelihoods.
For pilgrims on the Camino Português, the passage through Mourisca do Vouga marks a noticeable shift in the landscape, from the more enclosed inland terrain toward the open, luminous wetland environment that defines the Aveiro district’s coast.
