Description
Montreal is a commune in the Gers department, one of the earliest bastide towns in Gascony, founded in 1255 by the Count of Toulouse. The village occupies a commanding hilltop position above the Auzoue valley and retains its bastide character with a regular street layout, a central arcaded square, and the Gothic collegiate church of Notre-Dame.
The church has a fortified appearance with a crenellated wall line and a pointed Gothic facade. The bastide plan is particularly well preserved here, with covered arcades around the main square still defining the commercial and social heart of the village.
