Description
Monasterio de Zenarruza, also known as Colegiata de Cenarruza, is a medieval Augustinian collegiate monastery in the municipality of Ziortza-Bolibar, in the province of Bizkaia. The monastery occupies an isolated position on a forested hillside above the Lea river valley, at an altitude that gives it wide views over the surrounding green hills.
The complex includes a Gothic church with a carved portal, a Gothic cloister, and associated residential buildings, all in the regional stone construction characteristic of medieval Bizkaia. The monastery has operated continuously since the twelfth century, with periods of reform and restoration, and the current community maintains the tradition of welcoming pilgrims on the Camino del Norte.
For pilgrims, Zenarruza is one of the most atmospheric stops on the Bizkaia section of the route, combining the spiritual atmosphere of a working monastery with an exceptional architectural setting in a remote hillside location.
