Description

Edit

Alto del Perdón is a mountain ridge in the Sierra del Perdón, Navarra, at approximately 790 metres above sea level. It marks the highest point of the Camino Frances between Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port and Burgos, and is one of the most iconic landscape moments of the entire route.

The ridge is lined with modern wind turbines whose rotating blades are visible from Pamplona and the valley below. At the summit, a large iron sculptural installation by Vicente Galbete depicts a line of medieval pilgrims in profile, including figures on foot and on horseback. The accompanying inscription reads: where the road of the wind crosses the road of the stars.

For pilgrims, the Alto del Perdón is both a physical challenge and a symbolic threshold. The climb from Zariquiegui is steep and the ridge exposed, but the views over Pamplona and the distant Pyrenees on one side and the Navarrese wine country on the other are among the most memorable of the route.
