Description
Mealhada is a small town in the Aveiro district, situated on the flat agricultural plain of the Bairrada region in central Portugal. It lies along the historic N1 road, the old main artery connecting Lisbon to Porto, and benefits from its position on the Camino Português route.
The town has built its reputation almost entirely around leitão da Bairrada, a roasted suckling pig preparation that has become a regional cultural institution. Dozens of restaurants along the main road have made Mealhada synonymous with this dish across the country. The surrounding Bairrada region is also known for its sparkling wines, produced from Baga grapes on the limestone-clay soils nearby.
Beyond its gastronomic identity, Mealhada functions as a modest commercial and service hub for the surrounding agricultural municipalities. The town has a railway station on the Porto-Lisbon line, giving it reasonable transport links for its size.
