Description
Mansilla de las Mulas is a municipality in the province of León, Castilla y León, situated on the Esla river on the Camino Frances between the Sahagún plateau and the city of León. The town retains sections of its twelfth-century circuit wall with semicircular towers, one of the better-preserved medieval urban enclosures of this scale in the León region.
The town has a compact historic centre with traditional Leonese architecture, a main square, and the church of Santa María. The Esla river crossing and the surviving wall sections give the town a medieval character unusual among the plain farming communities of this stage.
For pilgrims, Mansilla is the last significant overnight stop before León city, providing full services and an architecturally interesting environment after the long Meseta stages.
