Description
Guendulain is a despoblado, an abandoned village, in Navarra, situated on the lower slopes of the Sierra del Perdón on the Camino Frances. The village was inhabited until the modern period but has since been completely depopulated, leaving only the stone shells of farmhouses and the parish church as ruins beside the route.
The ruins are notable for their state of preservation: the stone walls stand to varying heights, the roofless interiors open to the sky, and the overall ensemble gives a powerful sense of the medieval village form without any living inhabitants. The setting on the approach to the Alto del Perdón adds to the contemplative atmosphere.
For pilgrims, Guendulain provides an unexpected encounter with the archaeology of abandonment, a reminder that the Camino traverses layers of time that extend far beyond the pilgrimage itself.
