Description
Grou is a small locality in the municipality of Vila Nova da Barquinha, in the Santarém district. It occupies the low-lying terrain of the Tagus floodplain near the confluence with the Zêzere river, in a zone characterised by water-meadows, riverside vegetation, and the seasonal rhythms of the river.
The name may relate to the word for crane, the large wading bird that migrates through the Tagus valley, or to a local geographic or family name. The settlement is small and without significant infrastructure.
The Camino Português passes through or near Grou on the approach to Tomar, on a section of the route that follows river terrain before climbing to the city on its hilltop above the Nabão.
