Description

Edit

Grijo is a parish in the municipality of Vila Nova de Gaia, in the Porto district. Its principal monument is the Mosteiro de Sao Salvador de Grijo, a monastery with origins in the tenth century developed by Augustinian canons during the medieval period. The surviving church and cloister retain Romanesque and later Gothic and Manueline elements.

The cloister arcade is the most visually compelling feature, combining Romanesque austerity with later decorative additions. The complex retains an atmospheric presence at the village centre despite periods of abandonment and restoration.

For pilgrims on the Camino Portugues, Grijo marks the last significant historic monument before the urban approach to Vila Nova de Gaia and Porto.
