Description

Edit

Gião is a parish in the municipality of Vila do Conde, in the Porto district. It occupies agricultural terrain in the Entre-Douro-e-Minho landscape, with the characteristic mosaic of small fields, granite walls, and mixed cultivation that defines rural northern Portugal in this area.

The parish has a traditional stone-built core around its church and a surrounding landscape of maize, kale, and pasture interspersed with vine-covered field boundaries and occasional stone water troughs.

Gião falls on the Camino Português route between the urban fringe of Porto and the town of Barcelos, a section prized by pilgrims for recovering a genuinely rural character after the long suburban passage through the Porto metropolitan area.
