Description
Fonte Coberta is a small locality in the Coimbra district, likely in the municipality of Condeixa-a-Nova. Its name means covered fountain or roofed spring, describing a water source protected by a stone canopy or arch, a feature common along Portuguese pilgrimage and road networks where reliable fresh water was marked and protected for travellers.
Covered springs and fountains were essential infrastructure on the pre-modern road network, providing water for people and animals at regular intervals. Their stone structures often survive long after the communities around them have changed beyond recognition.
On the Camino Português, Fonte Coberta is a waypoint in the approach to Conimbriga and Condeixa, where the route crosses the limestone plateau terrain of the Coimbra district.
