Description

Edit

Eauze is a commune in the Gers department, situated on the Via Podiensis between Montreal and Manciet. The town was the capital of the Roman province of Novempopulania, one of the last provinces created by Diocletian’s administrative reorganisation of the empire.

In 1985, builders uncovered a remarkable hoard of over 28,000 Roman gold and silver coins, jewellery, and objects buried in the third century AD, now displayed in the local museum. The cathedral of Saint-Luperc is a fourteenth and fifteenth-century Gothic structure. For pilgrims, Eauze offers unexpected Roman depth and the coin hoard museum makes it one of the more distinctive stops on this section.
