Description
Condeixa-a-Velha is a civil parish in the municipality of Condeixa-a-Nova, in the Coimbra district. As the name suggests, it is the older settlement of the two Condeixa parishes, predating the more urban Condeixa-a-Nova nearby. The village sits adjacent to the archaeological site of Conimbriga, and its history is intertwined with the Roman city that once dominated this limestone plateau.
The village has a traditional whitewashed character typical of the Coimbra district, with low rendered houses, stone boundary walls, and the parish church as the settlement’s focal point. The surrounding terrain is the limestone plateau cultivated with olives, vines, and cereals.
For pilgrims on the Camino Português, Condeixa-a-Velha and the adjacent Conimbriga site mark one of the route’s most historically layered stages, where prehistoric, Roman, and medieval settlement overlap in a compact area.
