Descripción
Castañares is a locality in the municipality of Burgos, Castilla y León, situated in the northern suburbs of the city on the Arlanzón river. The area is primarily residential and light industrial, with the Camino Frances passing through on the approach to the historic city centre.
The name derives from castañas, meaning chestnuts, suggesting that chestnut trees once characterised this area before urban development. The Arlanzón river still runs through the district, its poplar-lined banks providing a natural corridor through the suburban fabric.
For pilgrims, Castañares is traversed as part of the final approach to Burgos, the urban fringe giving way to the historic city centre where the cathedral and the old town await.
