Description

Edit

Cartavio is a locality in the municipality of Navia, in Asturias, situated on the south bank of the Navia river. The village is associated with the industrial heritage of the Navia valley, particularly the sugar refinery and later rum distillery that operated at Cartavio from the early twentieth century, making it one of the few rum-producing sites in mainland Spain.

The Cartavio rum brand, produced from sugarcane cultivation in Cuba and later local processes, gave the village an industrial identity distinct from the agricultural communities surrounding it. The distillery infrastructure and the riverside setting defined the character of the settlement.

For pilgrims on the Camino del Norte, Cartavio is a passage point on the south bank of the Navia, in the industrial and rural mosaic of the lower Navia valley.
