Description
Azofra is a small municipality in La Rioja, situated on the Camino Frances between Nájera and Santo Domingo de la Calzada in the open agricultural plain of the Rioja media. The village was an important medieval pilgrim staging post, mentioned in medieval Camino texts as a rest point on the route.
The name Azofra is of Arabic origin, reflecting the Moorish occupation of the region before the Christian reconquest. The surrounding landscape is the open Rioja wine and cereal country, with wide skies and the characteristic agricultural patchwork of the Navarrese-Riojan borderland. A surviving section of Roman road has been documented near the village.
For pilgrims, Azofra is a well-serviced village with accommodation and a pilgrim fountain, providing a convenient mid-stage stop on the long walk from Nájera to Santo Domingo.
