Description
As Corredoiras is a small locality in the province of A Coruña, Galicia, on the Camino route between Sobrado dos Monxes and Arzúa. The name derives from corredoira, a Galician word for a traditional enclosed drove road or cattle path, the sunken lanes flanked by stone walls or earth banks that served as the principal movement corridors for livestock in the Galician rural economy.
Corredoiras are a characteristic feature of the Galician landscape, their stone or earth banks often overhung with oak branches and their surfaces worn deep by centuries of animal traffic. Many sections of the Camino de Santiago follow or coincide with ancient corredoira routes, and the name of this locality directly encodes that heritage.
