Description
Aroue is a small commune in the Pyrenees-Atlantiques department, situated in the Basque country interior on the Via Podiensis route between Navarrenx and Ostabat. The village has a traditional Basque rural character with a stone fronton, the walled court for pelota, set beside the village square.
The surrounding landscape is the enclosed green hill terrain of the Basque interior, with lush pastures, hedgerows, and the white-and-timber farmhouses of the Labourd tradition. For pilgrims, Aroue is a passage point in the final Basque stages before Ostabat, where the three French Camino routes converge.
