Finisterre and Muxía Way

Description

Edit

Unlike every other Camino, the Finisterre and Muxía Way begins rather than ends at Santiago de Compostela. From the cathedral it runs west across the Galician interior to two Atlantic destinations: Cape Finisterre, about 89 km away, and the fishing town of Muxía, about 86 km by the direct branch. A coastal link of roughly 30 km joins the two, so the route is commonly walked as a loop or in reverse, returning to Santiago on foot or by bus.

The early stages cross wooded valleys and farmland, passing the medieval bridge at Ponte Maceira over the Tambre and the market town of Negreira before climbing onto open moorland around Olveiroa. At the hamlet of Hospital the path divides, one branch descending through Cee and Corcubión to the cape, the other cutting north to the coast at Muxía.

Both endpoints carry older layers of meaning. Finis Terrae, the end of the earth, was understood by Roman geographers as the western limit of the known world, and the headland has long been associated with sun worship and the legendary Ara Solis. Muxía’s Santuario da Virxe da Barca stands on bare rock above the surf beside the Pedra de Abalar, a stone tied to a Marian apparition legend; the church was gutted by a lightning fire in 2013 and subsequently rebuilt.

The route was never part of the medieval pilgrimage in an official sense, though pilgrims made the journey from at least the twelfth century. It falls outside the UNESCO listing and does not qualify for the Compostela, but the councils of Fisterra and Muxía issue their own certificates, the Fisterrana and the Muxiana.
