Zarautz

Zarautz is a municipality in Gipuzkoa in the Basque Country, situated on a long sandy beach between the Getaria headland to the west and the hills above Orio to the east. The beach, over two kilometres in length, is one of the widest and most popular on the Basque coast and is a significant surfing destination.

The town has a medieval historic centre with the Torre Luzea, a tall defensive tower that remains one of the most visible landmarks in the old town. Several noble families had summer residences in Zarautz, and the town has a reputation for quality local gastronomy connected to its fishing tradition.

The Camino del Norte passes directly along the beach promenade at Zarautz, making it one of the more enjoyable and visually distinctive stages of the Basque coastal route.
