Description

Edit

Vimieira is a civil parish in the municipality of Mealhada or the adjacent Aveiro district area, in the Aveiro district. Its name derives from vimeiro, the Portuguese word for osier willow, a variety of willow whose flexible young shoots are harvested for basket-weaving and wickerwork. Settlements named Vimieira developed in the wetland margins and riverside terrain where osier willows could be cultivated.

The Aveiro district has a long tradition of basket and wickerwork production, associated with the fishing and farming communities of the Ria de Aveiro lagoon system. The osier willow harvest and the craft of weaving were central to the local rural economy in this area.

On the Camino Português, Vimieira falls in the flat coastal lowland section between Mealhada and Aveiro, in the wetland-influenced terrain of the lower Vouga corridor.
