Vilabade

Vilabade is a locality in the municipality of Castroverde, in the province of Lugo, Galicia, on the Camino Primitivo route between O Cádavo and Castroverde. The village is home to the Convento de Santa María de Vilabade, a Cistercian foundation with medieval origins, whose church retains a venerated late Gothic or Baroque statue of the Virgin known as the Virgin of Vilabade.

The monastery church and the surrounding conventual buildings give Vilabade an architectural distinction unusual for a small rural community in the Lugo interior. The setting is the green enclosed valley landscape typical of this part of the province, with pasture, mixed woodland, and traditional farmsteads.
