Description

Edit

Ventas de Narón is a locality in the province of Lugo, Galicia, on the Camino Frances on the plateau between Portomarin and Palas de Rei. The name means the inns or roadside taverns of Narón, recording the commercial roadside function of the settlement on the historic pilgrimage route.

The site is associated with the Battle of Narón, traditionally dated to 820 AD, in which Ordoño I of Asturias is said to have defeated a Moorish force near this location, marking one of the northernmost extensions of Moorish military activity in the Iberian Peninsula. A commemorative cross marks the traditional battle site.

For pilgrims, Ventas de Narón provides basic services on the plateau stage and the unusual historical context of a medieval military site on an otherwise pastoral corridor.
