Description
Valada is a civil parish in the municipality of Cartaxo, in the Santarém district. It sits directly on the Tagus floodplain in a zone historically subject to seasonal flooding, which has shaped both the village’s elevated layout and the agricultural land use around it. Rice paddies and water-meadows are characteristic features of the immediate landscape.
The village has a traditional character, with white-rendered houses and the compressed street plan typical of flood-adapted settlements in the lower Tagus valley. The river and its seasonal rhythms remain central to the local identity.
For pilgrims on the Camino Português, Valada sits on an optional riverside variant of the route, passing through some of the most remote and atmospheric terrain of the Portuguese section.
