Description
Somo is a coastal locality in the municipality of Ribamontán al Mar, in Cantabria, situated on the sandy spit that forms the eastern shore of the Santander bay opposite the city. The area has an extensive sandy beach running for several kilometres along the Atlantic-facing side of the spit, making it one of the longer and more exposed surf beaches on the Cantabrian coast.
A passenger and bicycle ferry connects Somo to Santander city across the bay, a short crossing that offers one of the more memorable urban approaches of the Camino del Norte. The ferry terminal, the long beach, and the surf culture give Somo a distinctive casual coastal character.
For pilgrims, the Somo-Santander ferry crossing is the standard Camino del Norte route into the city, avoiding the longer road route around the bay.
