Description

Edit

Sobreiro is a small locality in the Viana do Castelo district, in the northern Minho region of Portugal. Its name derives from sobreiro, the Portuguese word for cork oak (Quercus suber), indicating that cork oak woodland once defined this terrain.

Cork oaks are among the most visually distinctive trees in the Iberian Peninsula, recognisable by their deeply furrowed spongy bark and the pale reddish-orange lower trunk exposed after harvesting. The bark is stripped in cycles, leaving the lower portion smooth and coloured for several years before it regrows.

The Camino Português passes through this locality on the approach to the Lima crossing, in terrain that transitions from the inland valley corridor toward the coastal plain.
