Description

Edit

Peñafonte is a small locality in the municipality of Grandas de Salime, in Asturias, on the Camino Primitivo route near the Asturian-Galician border. The name combines peña, meaning rock or crag, with fonte, meaning spring or fountain, indicating a natural spring emerging at the foot of a rocky outcrop, a specific landscape feature that gave the settlement its identity.

The setting is the mountain terrain of the final Asturian approach to Galicia, where the route passes through a mosaic of exposed rocky formations, chestnut and oak woodland, and the green enclosed valleys typical of the border zone. The spring toponym suggests a reliable water source that would have been valuable to pilgrims on the mountain stage.
