Description
Palheira is a small locality in the municipality of Coimbra, in the Coimbra district. Its name derives from palha, meaning straw, with the suffix -eira indicating a place associated with straw storage or a particular type of barn. The toponym suggests a settlement that developed around or adjacent to agricultural storage infrastructure, a common origin for rural place names in Portugal.
The locality sits in the flat to gently undulating terrain on the outer approach to Coimbra, in the agricultural lowlands between the limestone hills and the city’s built edge. Cereal cultivation and mixed farming are characteristic of the surrounding land.
On the Camino Português, Palheira falls in the penultimate rural section before the route enters the city of Coimbra, where the flat plain gives way to the rising ground of the city’s southern districts.
